TCM Physician Cure Shingles (Herpes Zoster), Postherpetic Neuralgia 带状疱疹(生蛇) NO BURNING is required

TCM believes that besides viral infections, there is inner heat too. Chinese Medicine is used to expel the inner heat and toxin in the body. Most of my  patients were given Chinese anti-toxic oral herbal medicine and herbal plastering (no need to do skin burning). They can get well within 10 to 14 days depends on the how big the affected area and the seriousness of the shingles.

(1) In June 2011, an elderly lady, age 82, came with 5 other members of her family.  All them  including the daughters and sons looked very anxious. They did not know what the mother was suffering from. The patient complained of pain at her lower body, her buttock and her private part. She said that those areas were very painful and itchy. She could not sit down.  I looked at the affected areas. The skin was reddish and there were a lot of shingles with pus spread over a big area. They told me that the shingles erupted very fast within only a few days. I told them to buy her a swimming float for her to sit as the shingles were all around her lower body. They told me that they had already bought a car tyre to let her sit as she is very big and heavy. 

I prescribed some herbal medicine for her to wash the shingles and to apply externally. I also prescribed two weeks of oral Chinese medicine(powder type, no need to brew).  After two weeks, the daughter came to tell me that the mother got well and had no more pain and itch.

(2) One woman, age 31, had shingles on her waist.   She felt itchy and painful. Her condition was not so bad as it just started on the waist and she soon realized it was shingles. She came to see me and I prescribed Chinese medicine (powder form, no need to brew) for her to take and some herbal medicine to wash the shingles and herbal plastering to paste on the shingles.  She got well about a week later.

Note:  Most of the shingles appear on the waist (see attached pictures) and it spreads very fast within a 2~3 days. It is usually itchy and painful. Within 4~5 days, it normally develops into pus.

(3) A 65 year-old Chinese man came to see me. He had shingles on his chest and his back. Initially, he did not realize that the skin rash was shingles. According to him, the shingles spread very fast. Within 2~3 days he realized that the rash at his back was reddish and itchy. He could not sleep well at night as it was itchy and painful. I treated him with medication and herbal plastering. He came to me every day for the first three days for herbal plastering (no burning of skin was necessary). Within 10 days the shingles healed and the itchiness was gone.

(4) One Malay man, age 54, had a lot of shingles on his face.  His face was reddish and there were many shingles on his whole face, the chin, ears, neck and scalp.  He complained of pain and itch and inner heat. Most shingles cases start from the waist, but seldom from the face. His shingles was a very rare case. I prescribed herbal medicine for him to apply and also some oral medicine (powder type, no need to brew) to take for two weeks. Although the shingles looked quite serious and frightening outwardly, his condition got well quite quickly. He said that the pain and itch reduced in intensity and after one week the shingles subsided.

(5) A young man, age 23, came to see me. He had shingles on the left waist. He did not know what happened to him. He observed that the rashes spread very fast and over a bigger area. Within a few days, his shingles became very red and itchy. 

I prescribed for him oral Chinese herbs (powder type, no need to brew) and herbal plastering.  The herbs are to expel toxins and reduce the redness and pus in the shingles. His case was more serious and it took him 16 days to fully recover. During those 16 days, he could still go to work and did not feel too itchy.

(6) Shingles on the Hand

A man, age 65, came to see me one day. He showed me his hand and said that he did not know what happened to his left hand and it was very painful and itchy.

I looked at his left hand which was swollen and there were big blisters and pus on it.  It is indeed very rare to have shingles on the hand. I treated him with Chinese medicine and plasters. It was healed in 8 days. The swell subsided and the hand appeared normal again.

 Note : the swelling had subsided too.

(7) One old man, age 68, had shingles on his waist. He came to see me and complained of itch and pain. He said that although some of the shingles had already healed, it was still very itchy at night. He could not have a good night sleep as they were very disturbing. I prescribed some Chinese medicine for him to wash the shingles and apply externally. I also prescribed some herbal medicine (in powder form, no need to brew) for her to take orally.  After a few days, the shingles dried up and healed.  He had no more pain or itch.

Shingles on the Forehead
A women who had shingles on her forehead told me that she had shingles on her forehead for five days. Initially, she thought it might be skin allergy. As day passes by, she felt pain and itchiness on the forehead.  She felt very uncomfortable and could not sleep well at night. Her vision was slightly blurred. After a few treatments (about 4 days) from me, she said that the uncomfortable feelings were better and her eye vision was clear again. Her shingles got well after 8 days.

There were a few cases of shingles which grew around the eye (usually on one side of the eyes), vision was slightly blurred during the onset of shingles.  When the shingles get well, the vision become clear again.  So, do not worry if you have shingles on or around the eyes area.

However, in the case of Ophthalmic Shingles where shingles grew around the eye (usually on one side of eyes) can cause painful eye infections that may result in vision loss.

Shingles on the Chest

An elderly lady came to see me and looked very worried. She said she had shingles on her chest area. They were hot sensation on the shingles. They were painful, itchy and very uncomfortable.  She could not sleep well at night. After a few treatments, she got well.
