Ischemic stroke 缺血性中风 is the most common type of stroke. This happens when the brain’s blood vessels are narrowed or blocked, causing severely reduced blood flow and oxygen. The vessels may have accumulated a lot of fatty deposits (粥样病变) that caused blood clots (called the infarcts 血栓) and lodged in the blood vessels in your brain.
Haemorrhagic stroke 出血性中风occurs when a blood vessel in your brain ruptures and the blood leaks into the surrounding cells, causing damage of the surrounding cells in the brain. It can also be the rupture of an abnormal tangle of thin-walled blood vessels. When the stroke occur, the patients usually have high blood pressure but may not have a history of high blood pressure. But very likely they have weak spots in the blood vessels in the brain.
The above two types of stroke damages the "Yun Don Qu" （运动区）in the brain and affect the opposite side of the limbs to be paralyzed (瘫痪）meanging that if the right side of the brain is damaged, the left side of the limbs (arm and leg) become paralyzed 瘫痪. These stroke patients will not be able to lift up one side of the arm and leg. For serious cases, they will not be able to walk on their own. They needs to be assisted to walk and to bathe. Some will not be able to eat on their own. They may have slurred speech (言语不清， 说话含糊). Some of the patients may lose some of their memory while some may slowly regain their memory over time. Some patients cannot even urine on their own and need to be inserted with catheter 导尿管. All these bring a lot of inconveniences to the stroke patients.
In about 13 years ago, there was one famous American athlete called Devin, had very serious haemorrhagic stroke. He was paralyzed for 10 year and could not walk and was bedridden. His wife heard about the power of acupuncture and decided to bring him to China， Tian Jin (天津）to see a professor 石学敏院士. He, 中国现代针灸奠基人石学敏院士, treated Devin with acupuncture, using the special method that he invented called "醒脑开窍法” to treat him. Slowly he could talk a bit, stand and walk . Recently, his recovery journey was uploaded to the website (not sure of the actual date).
Dr. Ong had worked in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (the stroke department) from Aug 2002 to Feb 2004. She has treated many patients who were transferred to Ang Mo Kio Community Hospital for rehabilitation. During those years, almost every day there was one new case of stroke patient admitted to the hospital. She saw many serious cases of stroke during her stint in the hospital and have gain many years of clinical experience in the treatment of stroke. During that time most of the stroke patients would request to have acupuncture sessions. They would be allowed for acupuncture treatments only after their conditions are stabilized. All the patients must have referral letters from in-house western doctors before they are allowed to be treated. Most of the patients, especially those with serious condition, could not accept the facts that they are incapacitated. Some even cried and feel depressed. There are cases where patients suffered the stroke third time round and their cases are mostly serious. They lost their memory and not able to speak well and very often could not urinate on their own. They need to use catheter to help to urinate. The youngest stroke patient she had treated was 31 years old. She remembered when he was hospitalized, his wife was in confinement and could not come to see him. It was only two weeks later, his wife came to visit him. There was also an Taxi driver who cried and said that he was the only bread-winner in the house and his children were still young. There was a woman who had a stroke while she was inside a swimming pool. She was having fun with her nieces in the pool, suddenly, one side of her body became weak. When she was rushed to the hospital, she was diagnosed to have haemorrhagic stroke. Her case was so bad that her left arm was so heavy and could not lift up, she was bedridden and took three to four months to see improvements. There was also a case where a woman had a stroke. She went for an operation, one side of scalp was removed. Subsequently the scalp was replaced with an artificial scalp.
