Eczema
Technically eczema is slightly different and is a more general term, but many physicians and patients will refer to atopic dermatitis and eczema as the same thing. Eczema and atopic dermatitis are skin diseases where you have rough, red, dry, itchy skin. These diseases are not contagious.

This lady had very bad eczema on her fingers. She had seen Western GP and the eczema on her fingers come and goes for sometime. He decided to come to consult our TCM physicians. After several acupuncture and TCM treatment, she was happy that the eczema on her fingers eventually healed.

Our Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physicians have seen many children with cases of eczema. Most of them had mild to
moderate eczema, only a handful of them had very bad eczema. However,
there was one little girl who had very bad eczema. The parents were
very concerned as the girl tended to scratch her leg often and sometimes
she scratched until her eczema on her leg bled. The parents had consulted a general
practitioner (who practiced Western medicine) for many years, yet her
condition did not improve.
She
was 8 years old when she came to see me. She could not go to school as
she felt very uncomfortable. She scratched her eczema on her leg till it bled. The
parents had to put her in a stroller to come to see me.
The
parents were very concerned particularly the mother who attended to her
every day. She was worried that her daughter might never
recover from eczema. However, both parents were very patient and brought
her daughter to see me every two weeks. I treated her with traditional chinese medicine
and TCM herbal creams and about 3 months later she got well. Here are some of her pictures.

Eczema-- a Malay Boy
On May 2011, a Malay Boy, age 2½, came with his parents, suffers from Eczema for one year. He often feels itchy and scratches his hands and legs. The boy was brought to see western doctors many times, but had seen no improvement. His skin was very dry. He scratched until the eczema on her leg bleed. I had prescribed some traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal syrup for him, but he refused to drink. This is a very difficult case to treat as he refused to take medicine. TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) believe that eczema is due to the heat in the lung and the poor function of the spleen. Besides giving him some creams to apply and some Chinese herbal medicine to wash the eczema, I told the mother to refrain him from taking some food which may cause eczema to become worsen. The parents brought the boy to see me a few times and told me that they had seen some improvement in his eczema. On 2nd Oct 2011, the mother brought the boy to see me again for his cough, she told me that his eczema was better and the skin on his leg was not so dry too.

Over the years, I
have seen many patients who complained of having eczema on their palm and sole which were dry and cracked. They had
been suffering from eczema for many years and many of them had seen Western
doctors and dermatologists. They said that they had difficulties in doing work and
had pain when they walked.
A man of around 56
yrs old came to see me. He said his daily routine was to walk round all
the departments in his factory to carry out inspection. His sole was very
dry and cracked. He felt pain when walking. The eczema improved sometimes
and became bad again. Off and on this cycle repeated itself for the last 5
years. He wanted to find a cure for his eczema very badly.
He was introduced to
me through his friend. I treated him with acupuncture and prescribed traditional herbal
medicine (TCM). I told him that he had to be patient and he would get well in two to
three month’s time, but he had to adhere strictly to the treatment regime. Gradually,
his palm and sole became less dry and thus did not crack anymore. After two
months, the eczema slowly got well but still a little dry. After three months,
the eczema on his palm and sole healed completely.
Another woman, age 65, having the same eczema problem on her sole came to see me. Her sole was worse than previous patient. The condition of her sole also improved after two months of TCM treatment and taking oral traditional Chinese medicine.

Eczema on Palm
There
are many patients who have eczema on both palms. Most of these patients are
females and they often complain that they could not do household chores. They
felt very frustrated when their eczema palms never seem to get well for a long
time. Below are pictures of the palms of a man, age 62, whose eczema on
his palms was bad and the skin of his palms started to crack and peel
off. He had this eczema problem for a few years. He came to see me for TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) treatment. Eventually, his eczema healed.

Eczema --- A Chinese Man
A male patient, age 58, came to consult me about his eczema on his legs. He
told me that he had been
to National Skin Centre for his eczema skin problem for one year. He also went
for photo-therapy a few times and his conditions
were not getting better. Both his legs especially his soles had eczema with
very dry skin. The eczema was reddish, sometimes with blisters. The outer
layers of his skin at the soles became harden and were peeling
and were often itchy. Sometimes when his eczema got worse, he
felt pain in his legs when he walked. He came to know me through a friend’s recommendation. I treated
him as follows: prescribe traditional Chinese herbal medicine for him to wash his
eczema, cream to apply on his eczema and Chinese herbal medicine to take orally. I also told
him to abstain from some foods which he had to observe strictly. He got well completely of eczema after three months.
Basically, TCM adopts two methods: prescribing oral Chinese medicine
and external application (内外夹攻). We believe that there is an imbalance of the inner
organs; the lung is heaty and the spleen is weak. We also believe these
patients have very sensitive skin, therefore they should avoid some foods.
I
have treated many types of skin diseases. There are many different
types of eczema too. Each time my TCM physicians have to see the actual condition of the eczema skin. Eczema can be small dot-shaped, coin-shaped, rash-like type and
dried skin type. Most often eczema manifests in hands, legs and neck.
Sometimes it affects the elbow and the calf only. There are cases that
eczema manifests in the abdomen area or the buttock or the thigh or
below the breast. There are cases of eczema which healed
but the scabs do not drop off and continue to stay on the skin for a
long time. There is also eczema with very hard scabs which never
disappear for years. But generally, people who suffer from eczema have
very dry skin and they often have to apply moisturizer.
Eczema -- A Malay Girl
A
Malay girl, age 22, came to see me. She had eczema on
both side of her lower legs for 4-5 yrs. She had been treated
with steroid cream and oral medicine by National Skin Centre, but did
not see much improvement. I gave me her Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to brew and
consume. I was surprised she was willing to take Chinese medicine,
especially the brew type.
She
came to see me after taking 7 packages of Chinese herbal medicine. I
asked her whether her mother brew the herbs for her. She said she
wanted her eczema to get well fast, so she brewed the medicine herself.
Surprise? After taking altogether 14 packages of Chinese herbal medicine
(she also washed her eczema with the Chinese herbs). She told me that she was willing to do whatever I asked her to do in order to get well.

Eczema -- An Indian Man
An
Indian man came to see me on, he had eczema on his leg. He
has seen western doctor and the eczema did not heal. Many patients who
suffers from eczema will normally seeks treatment from western doctors. But when their eczema or Psoriasis do not heal, they may turn to alternate Chinese
medicine. They are willing to try Traditional Chinese Medicine and the TCM treatments.
This
Malay patient said that when his eczema was itchy and he could not help it but
to scratch it. Although he knew very well that by scratching it, it could make the eczema worse. Our TCM physicians prescribed Chinese Medicine granule powder for him and
some cream to apply. Our TCM physician told him to mix the powder with warm water and
drink. He came to see me again and the eczema was better.

This Indian lady
came from India, her daughter-in-law was staying in Singapore. She had very bad eczema on her lower legs when

swollen and oozing. She came for TCM treatment while she was in Singapore and took
two months medicine and returned to India.
Three months later
she came to visit her daughter-in-law again.
Her daughter-in-law was very concerned when she saw her scratching and wanted
her eczema to get well. This time her daughter-in-law saw that her leg eczema had improved at least 50% compared with the last
occasion. She saw all the oozing and raised bumps were gone. So, she brought her to our clinic again. Again,
the mother-in-law took two months medicine and returned to India. Her
daughter-in-law was relieved as her mother-in-law's condition continued
to improve and eventually recovered. I praised her daughter-in-law for
being so filial to her mother-in-law, she said to me that she loved her

Psoriasis --- A 10-year Old boy
牛皮癣(银屑病)
A young 10-year old boy with psoriasis visited our clinic. He has had psoriasis for half a year and was treated by a western dermatologist who prescribed steroid creams for his condition. But his psoriasis did not get better.
The mother said his son was fond of laksa and ate laksa in school everyday for a year. One day, a few red spots started to appear on his arm and gradually they developed into psoriasis. It appeared that the toxins in the shrimps used to boost the flavours in the laksa triggered the rashes and caused the psoriasis to flare up.
Recently, the young boy stopped the application of the steroid cream and the rashes flared up across his whole body. Both his ears were red and swollen. Psoriasis, which appeared like red rose patches developed on his back, front, hand, elbow and legs. The psoriasis on his scalp was bad.
The mother said all his school friends avoided him and did not want to play with him for fear that it was contagious. I advised her go to the school to talk to the teachers to inform the classmates that psoriasis is not contagious and that it will not spread to other people. This is to ensure that the child’s morale will not be negatively affected.
After taking our TCM medication and using our TCM herbal creams for two months, his psoriasis improved and slowly became less red. Some parts of the skin which previously had psoriasis became normal skin again. However, some areas of the skin was still red.
Slowly, the psoriasis almost disappeared (95%). So they thought that it should get cured soon. They were slackening in their regime. One and half months later, psoriasis slowly flared up again. This time it was not so serious. It flared up on his back, hand and leg. The psoriasis was much smaller and the flaking was much less. She observed that whenever his son fell and hurt himself, the wound would soon become psoriasis, but this time the wound would only form a scar and heal by itself.
The mother applied our TCM herbal cream on his body every day. She made sure her son also ate healthily. She realized after the son consumed chicken and milk, his skin would flare up the next day. So, she gave the son more vegetables and fruits instead. The mother also observed that when her son was outdoors skating for hours, his psoriasis would get better the next day which was evidence that exercise was good for her son. She also observed that the psoriasis around the lids of his eyes gradually disappeared after he was physically active for three hours or more.
