Shingles
is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same
virus that causes chickenpox. After the chickenpox infection recovered
in a person, the virus may live in the body nervous system for years
before reactivating as shingles. Shingles may also referred to as herpes
zoster.

TCM
believes
that besides viral infections, there is inner heat too. TCM Chinese

were given Chinese anti-toxic oral herbal medicine and herbal plastering
(many other physicians use joss sticks to burn the head of shingles but
our TCM physicians do not need to do skin burning). Shingles Herpes
Zostor can get well within 6 to 8 days depends on the
how big the affected area and the seriousness of the shingles.
An elderly lady, age 82, came with 5 other members of her family. All
them including the daughters and sons looked very anxious. They did not
know what the mother was suffering from. The patient complained of pain at her
lower body, her buttock and her private part. She said that those areas were
very painful and itchy. She could not sit down. I looked at the affected
areas. The skin was reddish and there were a lot of shingles with
pus spread over a big area. They told me that the shingles
erupted very fast within only a few days. I told them to buy her a swimming
float for her to sit as the shingles were all around her lower body. They told
me that they had already bought a car tyre to let her sit as she is very big
and heavy.
I prescribed some TCM herbal
medicine for her to wash the shingles and to apply externally. I also
prescribed two weeks of TCM oral medicine(powder
type, no need to brew). After two weeks, the daughter came to tell
me that the mother got well and had no more pain and itch.

A
young man, age 23, came to see me. He had shingles Herpes Zoster on the left
waist. He did not know what happened to him. He observed that
the rashes spread very fast and over a bigger area. Within a few
days, his shingles became very red and itchy.
I prescribed
for him TCM oral medicine herbs (powder type, no need to brew) and herbal
plastering. The herbs are to expel toxins and reduce the
redness and pus in the shingles herpes zoster. His case was more serious and it
took him 16 days to fully recover. During those 16 days, he could still go to
work and did not feel too itchy.

A
65 year-old Chinese man came to see me. He had shingles herpes zoster on his chest and his
back. Initially, he did not realize that the skin rash was shingles (带状疱疹 生蛇). According
to him, the shingles Herpes Zoster spread very fast. Within 2~3 days he realized that the
rash at his back was reddish and itchy. He could not sleep well at night as it
was itchy and painful. I treated him with TCM medication and TCM herbal plastering. He
came to me every day for the first three days for TCM herbal plastering (no burning
of skin was necessary). Within 10 days the Shingles Herpes Zoster healed and the itchiness
was gone.

Case (3)
A man, age 48
year-old, came to see me. He had shingles Herpes Zoster on his chest and his back. Initially,
he thought that he had rashes. He ignored it. But the rashes became painful and
itchy. In about 3~4 days, the rashes became more and more. He could not sleep well at night as it was
itchy and painful. He and his wife came to see me, they both looked very
worried. I told them these are shingles Herpes Zoster (带状疱疹or 缠腰精) and he could get well in 8~10 days
time. They still were worried as he could not go to work as the shingles bothered
him a lot.
I treated him
with TCM medication and TCM herbal plastering. He came to me every day for the first
three days for herbal plastering (we do not need to do burning of skin). Within 10
days the shingles Herpes Zoster healed and the itchiness was gone.

One
woman, age 31, had
shingles Herpes Zoster on her waist. She felt itchy and painful. Her
condition was not
so bad as it just started on the waist and she soon realized it was
shingles herpes zoster.
She came to see me and I prescribed TCM Chinese medicine (powder form,

to brew) for her to take and some herbal medicine to wash the shingles
herpes zoster and TCM herbal plastering to paste on the shingles Herpes
Zoster. She got well about a week
later.

Shingles Herpes Zoster on the
Hand
A man, age 65, came
to see me one day. He showed me his hand and said that he did not know what
happened to his left hand and it was very painful and itchy.
I looked at his
left hand which was swollen and there were big blisters and pus on it. It
is indeed very rare to have shingles herpes zoster on the hand. I treated him with TCM Chinese
medicine and plasters. The shingles herpes zoster was healed in 8 days. The swell subsided and the hand
appeared normal again.

Shingles on the Arm
Shingles appear on the arm is very rare. A man came to our clinic complaining he has shingles on his arm. It happened only a few days. It spread to his whole arm with red blisters filled with yellow/white fluid inside. It was very painful for him. He took Western medicine "Acyclover", but the redness and blisters did not seem to go away. So he came to our clinic to seek alternate treatment. His case recovered very fast (about a week).
There was another young kids, 10 yrs old, also had shingles on his arm came with his father to our clinic. The shingles appeared in his whole arm with red blister filled with yellow fluid too. However, he also recovered very fast (also about a week). Though he was very young, he was prepared to have acupuncture and take herbal medicine.This was because we told him that acupuncture is less painful than the pain of shingles.

Shingles on the Forehead and Around the Eyes

already. Initially, she
thought it might be skin allergy. As the days passed by, she felt pain

itchiness on the forehead. She felt very uncomfortable and could not
sleep well at night. Her vision was slightly blurred. After a few

(about 4 days) from me, she said that the uncomfortable feelings were
better
and her eye vision was clear again. Her shingles got well after 8 days.
Usually, shingles Herpes Zoster do not affect vision and when shingles
healed, the eye-sight recovered.

Shingles Externally Healed But Pain Still Persists
Postherpetic Neuralgia ( 带状疱疹后遗症 )

There were a number of patients who came to our TCM clinic and these people are suffering from Postherpetic Neuralgia.
Postherpetic Neuralgia is a complication of shingles, which is caused by the chickenos (herpes zoster) virus. Postherpetic Neuralgia affects nerve fibers and skin, causing burning pain that lasts long after the rash and blistersof shingles disappear.
If Postherpetic Neuralgia is untreated, the person may continue to suffer pain and burning sensation for long period of time which may run into years. However, Postherpetic Neuralgia are limited to the area of skin where the shingles outbreak first occurred-most commonly in a band around your trunk, usually on one side of your body. However, Postherpetic Neuralgia only happens on elderly patients presumably their constitution is weaker.
When do you know it is postherpetic Neuralgia?
Answer:
1) Pain that lasts 3 months or longer after the shingles rash has healed. The associated pain has been discribed as burning, sharp and jabbing or deep and aching;
2) Sensitivity to light touch. People with the postherpetic neuralgia condition often can't bear even the touch of clothing on the affected skin (allodynia);
3) Itching and numbness. Less commonly, postherpetic neuralgia sometimes caused an itchy feeling or numbness.

Shingles Externally Healed But Pain Still Persists
Postherpetic Neuralgia ( 带状疱疹后遗症 )
An 85 years old man came to see me and complained that he suffered from shingles herpes zoster for one month. He had seen a western doctor (GP) at the onset of shingles herpes zoster. He was prescribed many types of western medicine. He said now his shingles herpes zoster seemed to have gotten well externally. But he still has pain especially at night and needed to take painkiller. He said the pain was very disturbing during the night; it felt like ants were wriggling under the shingles herpes zoster. He had to take painkiller every day.
I told him that the discomfort and pain can be cured by acupuncture and herbal plastering. No burning of skin is necessary. Most people got well within a week (or less in some cases). He came every day for 6 days and gradually the pain and discomfort disappeared.
These kinds of experiences are told by many patients who
suffered from shingles Herpes zoster. Some of them (especially the elderly people) suffered
for months (even years), not knowing what to do.
When I was working in Tan Tock Seng Hospital as an
acupuncturist (over more than 10 years ago), an 80 years old woman was brought
in by her daughter to see me. The woman had shingles herpes zoster on her private parts.
Although her shingles herpes zoster appeared cured externally, she had pain every night. She
said the pain was so bad that she could not wear her panty. When the thighs
rubbed against one another, she would have pain and discomfort. So, she didn't
want to wear panty!
When she came to see me at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (I was working there as an acupuncturist),
she did not wear any panty. I gave her 7-8 sessions (roughly what I could
recall) of acupuncture treatment. Her discomfort and pain slowly went off.
At my own clinic now, I see many such cases every month and
these patients are happy with the results. Normally, it takes 5 to 7 days to
get well depending on the severity of the shingles herpes zoster. At the onset of shingles herpes zoster,
we also give TCM herbal medicine as it helps to cure the shingles herpes zoster faster.
Chinese traditional medicine (TCM) believes that besides virus
attack, it is also due to poorer immunity and "heatyness" in the
body. So, we would advise patients not to take "heaty" and
"toxic" food during the onset of shingles herpes zoster and also at least one month
after the recovery of shingles herpes zoster ( 带状疱疹 生蛇 ).
Various Stages of Shingles Herpes zoster:
1). Become red, painful and itchy, worse at night;
2). Next, form blisters with fluid or pus; colour turns
transparent or yellow or green; still painful and itchy;
3). Gradually, it turns black and dried and forms
scabs;
4). Scabs drop off itself and healed; no more pain and
itchiness. All these likely to take 6 to 7days to get well if shingles herpes zoster sufferer
takes TCM Chinese herbal medicine, apply herbal plastering and acupuncture.
Otherwise it will take longer.
