They treat acne and pimples with special prescriptions using Chinese herbal medicine.
Acne is most common in teenagers. Three out of ten teenagers have some acne. Western doctors believe that hormonal changes may be the cause of acne.
From my experience treating acne
cases, I find that Chinese herbal medicine is very effective in the treatment
of acne. For normal acne cases, it normally takes about two to three
months to get well. For severe acne cases, it may take a little longer.
Basically, we treat from the inside (meaning inside of the body). TCM
believes that it is due to the “heatiness” of the lung and one must refrain
from taking too much chilli, peanuts, chocolates and cold drinks. We also treat
from the outside (meaning on the surface/face). We give them cream to apply on
their face too. But more importantly, it is the Chinese medicine that clears
the toxic in the body.

The difference in eczema and acne are:

One young man, age
27, came to see me for his acne. He told me that he was a singer and was
working in a night club in Clarke Quay. He said he came from China. Before he
came to Singapore, he never had acne. He said that as a singer, he must have a
good appearance and he could not afford to have acne on his face. So, through
his friend’s recommendation, he came to see me. I gave him one month’s supply
of Chinese herbal medicine (in powder form). He took it faithfully. He came
back again after he finished the medicine. His condition improved. I prescribed
him another month of Chinese herbal medicine. I told him that he should
be well after this. However, he came back again on the third month,
telling me that his acne was all gone. But occasionally, his face may pop
out a few acnes especially if he drank more alcohol and ate many peanuts. He
said he wanted to look good and wanted the acne to disappear completely from
his face. Therefore, he wished to have another month of medicine. I prescribed
him another month of medicine and he was well after that.
Besides him, there
were many young boys and girls also came to see me for their acne. They
too wanted to look good. Most of them were working people in their twenties who
could afford to pay for themselves. Only a few teenagers were brought in by
their parents… these parents were concerned about their children’s looks.

Acupuncture for Acne

Many
acne/pimples sufferers come for acupuncture, especially girls. They said after
several treatments of acupuncture, their acne seem to subside and pop out less.
I always advise them not to squeeze the acne but to let it "ripen" by
itself, and let the pus out naturally. This way, the face is unlikely to have scars.
We also do acupuncture for eye bag,
wrinkles and freckles. Acupuncture helps to reduce dark and flabby eye
bags. After several treatments, wrinkles are less and freckles or
unevenness of pigmentation on the face are likely to disappear or reduced and
also the complexion of the face becomes fairer.

We also do facial treatment. Facial treatment
includes cleansing, facial massage, taking out of black heads and finally
facial mask for the face. The effect of facial treatment is to make the face look fairer,
fresh and vibrant. It can also help to reduce acne, wrinkles and freckles.

Rosacea
In addition, we can also treat cases of rosacea. Rosacea is a very common
red, acne-like skin condition. The main symptoms of rosacea include red or pink
patches, visible tiny broken blood vessels, small red bumps, redcysts. Many people who have rosacea may
just assume they blush or flush easily or are just very sun sensitive. Here is
an interesting case:
One girl, age 21, came to see me, complaining that she had
rosacea for about three years. She observed that her face is always red
as compared to her peers. She said that whenever she is under the sun, her face
became more red than usual. She is a pretty girl but she feels very
uncomfortable when people asked her why her face is so red. She is studying in
the NUS and wanted to cure her rosacea.
I examined and asked her questions. I found out from her that
she also had gastric problems besides rosacea. I treated her with some Chinese
herbal medicine and also asked her to come for ten sessions of acupuncture
treatment for her face. I told her that TCM adopts holistic approach to
all illnesses. The herbal medicine was to reduce heat on the upper body, expel
wind in the stomach, increase digestion and enhance circulation for the
face. After ten sessions of acupuncture treatment, she told me that her
gastric problem is better and she feels that her face is not so red.

TCM Physician TCM Treatment for Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that mainly affects your scalp. It causes scaly patches, red skin and stubborn dandruff. Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect oily areas of the body, such as the face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids and chest. It can also affect babies and infants, it causes crusty, scaly patches on the scalp it is known as cradle cap. For the adults, you may have patches of greasy skin covered with flaky white or yellow scales or crust on the face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids, chest, armpits, groin area or under the breasts.
The affected area are usually oily with dead skin build-up. Seborrheic dermatitis is also called dandruff, seborrheic eczema and seborrheic psoriasis.
Our TCM physicians have treated many cases of seborrheic dermatitis. Based on their symptoms and the affected area, we treat differently on different cases. We have seen seborrheic dermatitis cases on Indian, Caucasian, Malay and Chinese. We use natural herbs, Chinese Traditional Medicine, herbal bath and in some cases we also use acupuncture treatment. Seborrheic dermatitis usually disappear after one to two months depends on the duration of the skin problem and its stubbornness. In this case, we would advise patients to avoid oily food and fried food during the treatment. However, they can resume taking any food after their recovery.
