(1). I havea fewcouples who came to see me for their
fertility problems. Most of the women were about 33 to 40years of age. Some of them have already one child
but not able to have a second child for years. There were some who had miscarriages 2~3 times
while the others had no child at all. Some
of them had tried IVF but unsuccessful. There was onecase wherea
woman who was 43½ yearsold had a
baby through IVF and wanted to have another baby at the age of 45. She told me
doctors of IVF department are not willing to treat any patient who
has reached 45 years of age.
On 11 Oct 2008, a couple came
to see me in my clinic. The wife was 37½ yrs old while the husband was 39 years
old. They were married for 7 years. The wife had two miscarriages, one in 2005, another in
2007.Shehad tried IVF too but not successful. They came to see
mefor a last try. Both of
them werevery determined to
give it one last try. Iasked them
about the husband's seminal test results and the wife menses conditions.
I prescribed 3 months' Chinese herbal medicine for both of them. They tookthe
medicine faithfully. On 28thFeb 2009, they came to see me again. This time they came with the wife’s mother. The mother
came to see me for her knee pain and grumbled to me that the daughter
had not conceived. The couplethemselves was
very nice and understanding. They never grumbled but expressed their wish
to continue to take another3
months'of medicine. The wife
told me that she observed that after taking my medicine, her menses were more
regular and had less blood coagulation. On 5th Sept
2010, they surprised me by bringing their new born baby to my clinic. They told me the wife conceived in Oct 2009 and
the baby was born in July 2010.
In this case, I would say the
credit should go to the couple as they were reallyvery determined to have a
baby. In most cases, women are able to conceive but because
their wombs are not strong, they tend to have miscarriages. This group of women stand a good chance to have
baby through herbal Chinese medicine.
(2). A man,
age 33, came with his wife last year to see me. He
said National University Hospital had carried out a seminal
appraisal test on him and found that the motility of the sperm was slow and the
sperm count was also low. He was prescribed Vitamin E. Then he went to
KK Hospital and he was prescribed Vigor-Ace Multi Vitamin and
Tribestan. After taking the medicine, he went
to National University Hospital to have his seminal
appraisal test again and found that his sperm count went even lower to
2.9m.
He said
occasionally he had back pain and easily awaken at night. Other than
that he was healthy.
I told him that
he needed to take three months of Chinese Herbal Medicine and he
could go for seminal test again to see whether the parameters have
improved or not. One month after taking my medicine, he came and
showed me the seminal report which was taken
in National University Hospital. The result was good (see
attached report, patient and Lab officer name had been blocked for privacy
purpose).

I
was learning under a well-known professor in China, Chuan Zhou泉州. Her name is Zhong Xiu Mei 钟秀美教授. She was introduced by my mentor
Professor Lee Kim Long李金龙教授. She was veryfamous in treating fertility and other gynecological problems. She was
then already 65 years old and was willing to impart her knowledge to me as
she was about to retire from her post
in Chuan Zhou Hospital (泉州中医院). In this hospital,
Chinese physicians are allowed to carry out small operations such as abortion, blockages fallopian tube surgery (通输卵管手术),pap smear, simple fibroid surgery etc.I had learned a lot from her. At the end of the course,
she gave me a few books and asked me to treasure and learn fromit. But many of her experience could not be used
in Singapore as we, Chinese physicians, are not allowed to give
injectionsor carryoutsurgery
of any kind. However, we can prescribe Chinese medicine and teach
couples who want to have baby to know when is best time to conceive baby and
how to record temperatures etc.
In our TCM clinic, We TCM physician have seen many woman especially those around the mid 30swho tend to haveproblems such as menstrual pain (经痛), fibroid in the uterus (子宫肌瘤) and endometriosis (子宫内膜异位症). During their menses, they had severe
pain and need to take pain killer. Many of them told me that they had
blood clots when they menstruate and the blood flow was heavy.
I recommend them to take herbal medicine
for5~6 months.
These womencame back every
month to take medicine and most of them told me that their menstrual flow was
better, more regular and their menstrual pain was reduced. Some of them even
told me that they used to have headache before or after the mensesbut after takingthe herbal medicine, their headache
was gone. Those women who had fibroid in the uterus, found that either the
fibroidwas reducedin size or did not grow
bigger. Some of them told me that they had gone for operation to
remove the fibroid in the uterusbut after
3~4 years,the fibroid grew
again. They went for a second operationto
remove the fibroid. After
the secondroundof operation, theydecided to seek TCM (Traditional
Chinese Medicine) treatment.
We have special medicine and methods, very effective!
Menstruation, commonly known as a period, is the natural, monthly shedding of the uterus lining. It is a key part of the menstrual cycle, signaling that the body is preparing for a potential pregnancy. Most individuals with a uterus experience this biological process, which usually begins between 9 to 15 years old and continues until menopause.
A typical menstrual cycle spans from the first day of bleeding to the first day of the next period is about 28 days plus or minus.
Clinically speaking, we see a lot of young girls experiencing menstrual pain during their teenage. Also they have delayed menses, early menses, or amenorrhea problems. These girls usually like to take cold drinks, some even like to bite ice cubes.
Delayed or irregular menstruation in young girls can happen for many reasons, and some are completely normal while others may need medical attention.
A girl’s periods are
often irregular for the first 2–3 years after they begin because hormones are
still maturing. But if periods are very delayed, absent, or suddenly stop,
common causes include:
Normal puberty variation — some girls simply start
later than others.
Low body weight or excessive exercise — intense
sports, dieting, eating disorders.
Weight gain or obesity — can affect hormone
balance.
Stress or emotional changes — exams, anxiety,
family stress, poor sleep.
Thyroid problems — both overactive and underactive
thyroid can disrupt periods.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) — a hormone
condition that may also cause acne or excess hair growth.
Nutritional deficiencies — especially iron
deficiency or poor nutrition.
Chronic illness or medications — some medical
conditions affect hormone cycles.
Doctors usually become
more concerned if:
periods have not started by age 15, or
there is more than 3 months without a period after
periods had already started regularly, or
there are symptoms like severe pain, excessive hair growth,
major weight changes, or milky breast discharge.
A pediatrician, family
doctor, or gynecologist may check:
growth and puberty development,
diet and exercise,
stress levels,
blood tests for hormones or thyroid,
sometimes an ultrasound.
signs of PCOS,
A “normal” teen cycle
usually means:
First period age: commonly between 12–15
years
Cycle length: often 21–45 days in
the first few years
Bleeding duration: about 2–7 days,
Flow: light to moderate,
Irregularity: skipped months or uneven timing can
happen during the first 2–3 years
After a few years, cycles
usually become more regular:
around 21–35 days per cycles
Doctors may want
evaluation if:
no periods by age 15
periods started but then stop for more than 3 months
very heavy bleeding (soaking pads hourly)
severe pain preventing school/activities
cycles remain very irregular years after starting
Signs
of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)多囊卵巢综合征)
PCOS is a hormone
imbalance that can affect teenagers and young women. Symptoms vary, and not
everyone has all of them.
Common signs include:
Irregular or missed periods
periods far apart
very light or very heavy periods
skipped months
Acne
especially persistent or severe acne on the face,
chest, or back
Excess hair growth
thicker/darker hair on the face, chest, abdomen, or
chin
Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
Oily skin
Thinning scalp hair
hair shedding similar to male-pattern hair loss
Darkened skin patches
especially around the neck, armpits, or groin (can
suggest insulin resistance)
Some girls with PCOS also
have:
mood changes
fatigue
trouble with blood sugar control
Doctors diagnose PCOS
using:
menstrual history
physical examination
blood hormone tests
sometimes ultrasound
In teenagers, diagnosis
can be tricky because irregular periods and acne are also common during normal
puberty, so doctors look for a consistent pattern over time.
Treatment may include:
healthy nutrition and exercise
weight management if needed
acne or hair-growth treatments
If you want, I can also
explain:
how doctors test for PCOS (多囊卵巢综合征)
,
the difference between normal teen irregular periods
and PCOS,
or foods/lifestyle changes that may help regulate
periods.
