TCM Physician Acupuncture for Obesity and Slimming 针灸减肥
An elderly lady, age 65, complained of having hypertension, ache and pain. She felt that she had water retention and often had back pain. She could not squat because of her knee pain. She said her family doctor asked her to reduce weight so that her upper body would not add pressure to her knee. So, she decided to come for weight management. She was obese and weighed about 92 kgs. She told me that she wanted to reduce weight not because she wanted to be beautiful but to stay healthy.
I told her that the whole process of TCM weight management can improve her general health condition. And in order to reduce her weight, she had to do some exercise in the morning. She must avoid taking supper often and should not take some food especially oily foods and soft drinks. She also must have the patience to come continuously every week. I also mentioned to her that she had to come twice a week, 8 sessions a month. The cost of 8 sessions was $680*. One session is one hour. She could opt to continue for another two to three months if she finds the treatment effective. I normally will charge on a monthly basis as when the patients find improvement, they will want to continue for another month. Each session consists of acupuncture, cupping and TCM treatment.
She came for one month losing about 4 kgs and continued for another two months with us.
She told me that she had slimmed down about 13 ~14 kgs and felt that her body was lighter and did not feel as tired as before. She also said that she felt healthier and could squat better and had less ache and pain.

Dr. Ong Swee Ling had at least 20 years of clinical experience in Chinese Traditional Medicine. She also had worked in Tan Tock Seng Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (situated at Ang Mo Kio Community Hospital) as an acupuncturist and subsequently at Tan Tock Seng Hospital @Jalan Tan Tock Seng in Acupuncture Department also as an acupuncturist from 2002 to 2004. During her stint in Tan Tock Seng Hospital Rehabilitation Centre, she gained practical experience in the treatment for spinal cord injury, stroke, brain and neurological illnesses. She was invited by the Principal of Specialist Traditional Chinese Medicine Centre to become a TCM resident ophthalmologist physician 中医眼科医师on a part time basis from 2006 to 2007. She had worked for Lee Kim Long Acupuncture Clinic李金龙针灸馆 as an acupuncturist in 2000 to 2002. She was a council member of the Singapore Chinese Physicians’ Association from 2000 to 2002. She was also appointed as an honorary physician at Chung Hwa Free Clinic from 2000 to 2005. She had tutelage on TCM oncology with Professor Wu Gui Zhu 吴贵珠 of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2006 and also Professor Zhao Ying Jie 赵英杰博士, who was then the Principal of Singapore Traditional Chinese Medical College, in Chung Hwa Free Clinic, Cancer Department (肿瘤组) from 2003 to 2008 where she gained valuable clinical experience on TCM treatment for various types of cancer. She had tutelage on TCM treatment for infertility, endometriosis and Polycystic Ovary syndrome with Professor Zhong Siu Mei (钟秀美教授), a well-known TCM gynaecologist (中医妇科教授) in Quanzhou, China in 2000. She also had tutelage on skin disease with Professor Zhang En Hu (张恩虎), a renowned TCM Skin specialist in Nanjing in 2001 to 2004.
She started her own clinic at Telok Blangah in April 2004. Since young, she had learned from her grandfather who was a traditional Chinese physician and had observed many clinical cases during her younger days.
She is bi-lingual and conversant in English and many other Chinese dialects. She could speak Hing Hua dialect as her grandfather was from Fujian, Hing Hua province, China. She speaks Cantonese as her mother was a Cantonese.

Physician Wu studied Western medicine and graduated from the Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences (Guangdong, China) in 1988. She was a medical doctor with the Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Guangdong Shunde Leliu Hospital from 1988 to 1992.
Physician Wu graduated as the top student from the TCM Bachelor degree course conducted jointly by the Singapore College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine many years ago. She was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine for her academic achievement.
After her graduation, Physician Wu went to China for a year to further her clinical experiences. Her internship was at the TCM Specialist Clinic, Shunde Hospital which is affiliated with the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. Under the tutelage of Professor Mai Xiujun, a renowned TCM doctor, Physician Wu gained experiences in TCM internal medicine and pediatrics and in TCM rehabilitative medicine, the recovery treatments relating to stroke, frozen shoulders and degenerative arthritis of the knees. She also had tutelage on TCM oncology with Professor Lu Jisen, a renowned TCM doctor based in Guangzhou where she gained practical experience in the treatment for various types of cancer.
Physician Wu has both Western medicine and TCM qualifications with competencies in the treatments of various illnesses. She took a course of English language for one year and is able to speak English fluently and can speak Cantonese dialect. She is a registered TCM physician with the Ministry of Health,Singapore.
