How TCM Physicians Treat Sinusitis (鼻窦炎), Allergic rhinitis(鼻敏感)
Many young people have sinusitis. They usually feel that their nose is stuffy, with a bit of running nose as well as sneezing in the morning. Then they get better in the afternoon. Some of them have acute sinusitis and have very bad running nose and sneezing.

Sinusitis is
inflammation of the air cavities within the passages of the nose. Sinusitis can
be caused by infection, but also can be caused by allergies and chemical or particulate irritation of the sinuses.
Most clinicians
agree that except for rare instances, sinus infections are not contagious
but it has recurrent tendency. Sinusitis always recurs over a long period of
time and sometimes it continues for years.
Most of the
patients who come to me have already consulted western
doctors on their sinusitis problems. Some of them told me that they do not wish
to have ethmoidectomy or other surgery methods to remove the infected
tissue/polyps. They would rather seek TCM methods to relief their
problems.
I usually examine them with
an instrument and find that they have redness around the nasal
cavity, swelling of nasal polyps which block the opening of the sinuses.
I told them from the TCM point of view,
sinusitis is due to the functionality of lung. As the circulation of air
and water in the lung is not smooth (气机不畅, 肺的通调水道不利), it leads to stagnation of air flow “气Qi”. I explained to them, TCM herbs
can be used to reduce inflammation, disperse stagnation, enhance circulation of
air and water in the lung as well as improving the functionality of lung,
but they have to take the medicine for 2 to 3 months to see the
effect. For some
acute sinusitis cases, I recommended acupuncture treatment (which can
be 5 to 10 sessions or more depending on the severity of sinusitis).
Clinically, I observed the condition of these sinusitis patients
improved and/or the occurrences reduced or disappeared.
We have treated many cases such as breathing difficulty, shortness of breath, hard to lay down to sleep due to coughing, sudden coldness, shiver (颤抖). The patients were happy with the results after several treatments as they recovered.
TCM treatment is particularly good for young children as their lung is growing and as long as we strengthen their lung, build them up strong, let the circulation in the lung flow well, they can recover from sinusitis and allergic rhinitis.
