TCM treat Asthma and Cough for Kids and Adults

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can be helpful for managing asthma in both children and adults.  There are reports that most young children can grow out of asthma before the age of 18 years old.  That was because when he turns adulthood his main organs 心,肝,肺,脾,肾 (heart, liver, lung, sleep and kidney) are fully grown.   With TCM treatments, many patients do report fewer attacks, better breathing, and improved overall health.

HOW TCM VIEWS ASTHMA
In TCM, asthma is not just a lung problem. It is usually linked to imbalances in:
* Lung (肺) – controls breathing
* Spleen (脾) – affects phlegm production
* Kidney (肾) – supports long-term respiratory strength

COMMON PATTERNS INCLUDE:
* Phlegm accumulation blocking airways
* Weak lung qi (容易气短)
* Kidney deficiency (chronic, recurrent asthma)

COMMON TCM TREATMENTS:
1. Herbal medicine
    Customized formulas are the core treatment.
    They aim to:
* Reduce phlegm
* Stop wheezing
* Strengthen lung and kidney

Examples (must be prescribed individually):
* For acute wheezing: formulas that clear phlegm and open airways
* For chronic cases: tonifying herbs to prevent recurrence.

2. Acupuncture (针灸)
* Helps relax bronchial muscles
* May reduce frequency of attacks
* Often used for both children (gentle techniques) and adults.

3. Pediatric TCM (小儿推拿)
For children especially:
* Non-invasive massage techniques
* Strengthens immunity
* Useful for kids who cannot take strong herbs

4. Cupping / Gua Sha (拔罐 / 刮痧)
* Used mainly in older children/adults
* Helps clear lung heat and phlegm
* Not typically first-line for young children

What kind of results to expect:
1)  Short-term:
* Reduced coughing and wheezing
* Better sleep
* Less phlegm

2) Long-term (with consistent care):
* Fewer asthma attacks
* Reduced reliance on inhalers (in some cases)
* Improved immunity

Important cautions
* Do NOT stop prescribed inhalers (like bronchodilators or steroids) without medical advice
* Severe asthma attacks are medical emergencies
* TCM works best as complementary care, not replacement in serious cases

Children vs Adults
1) Children:
* Often respond faster
* Focus is on strengthening immunity and preventing recurrence

2) Adults:
* May take longer (especially chronic cases)
* More emphasis on kidney and lung strengthening

TCM can provide good supportive results—especially for long-term control and reducing recurrence—but it requires:
* Proper diagnosis (辨证论治)
* Consistent treatment (weeks to months)
* Integration with conventional care when needed

Many young kids had asthma in their childhood day.  Often parents are worried and will bring them to see western doctors.  There are also adults or elderly people who also suffer from asthma. They may experience  persistent cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulty, hard to lay down to sleep due to coughing, or sudden coldness.
Western doctors may prescribe nebulizer, inhaler or nose puff when they have asthma.

There are people who have asthma for long periods of time who may wish to turn to TCM for alternative treatments.  In our clinics, we see many people come to us. For young kids who suffer from asthma, we usually will do pediatric child massage "小儿推拿“  for them and prescribe oral TCM medicine.  We also prescribe natural herbs for them to inhale the vapor into their lung to clear  their phlegms.  Often the results are fantastic!  But for the adults, we will do acupuncture for them. The aims are to strengthen their lungs so that they may eventually get rid of asthma.  We also prescribe oral herbal medicine.  Many of them find the inhale herbal medicine very effective.

We are glad to say that we have seen many young kids and adults slowly became stronger and grow out of asthma.  Their parents were happy with the results.

Many young people have sinusitis.  They usually feel that their nose is stuffy, with a bit of running nose as well as sneezing in the morning.  Then they get better in the afternoon. Some of them have acute sinusitis and have very bad running nose and sneezing. If the conditions get worse, they may develop asthma and breathing difficulties.  In our case, we have our TCM method where we use natural herbs, they can cook the herbs and then inhale vapor into their lung, to ease their breathing difficulties.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sinusitis is inflammation of the air cavities within the passages of the nose. Sinusitis can be caused by infection, but also can be caused by allergies and chemical or irritation of the sinuses.

Sinusitis always recurs over a long period of time and sometimes it continues for years.  Generally, except for rare instances, sinus infections are not contagious but it has recurrent tendency.

Most of the patients who come to our clinics have already consulted western doctors on their sinusitis problems. Some of them told us that they do not wish to have ethmoidectomy or other surgery methods to remove the infected tissue/polyps. They would rather seek TCM methods to relieve their problems.

I usually examine them with an instrument and find that they have redness around the nasal cavity, swelling of nasal polyps which block the opening of the sinuses.  We told them from the TCM points of view, sinusitis is due to the functionality of lung.  As the circulation of air and water in the lung is not smooth (气机不畅, 肺的通调水道不利), it leads to stagnation of air flow Qi”.  I explained to them, TCM herbs can be used to reduce inflammation, disperse stagnation, enhance circulation of air and water in the lung as well as improving the functionality of lung, but they have to take oral medicine for 1 to 2 months depends on their severity. For some acute sinusitis cases, We would recommend acupuncture treatment (which can be 5 to 10 sessions or more depending on the severity of the sinusitis). Clinically, I observed the condition of these sinusitis patients improved and/or the occurrences reduced or disappeared. Our TCM treatment was to improve the lung of the patients, when their lung is strengthened and nourished (especially in the case of young kids), slowly, the sinusitis are likely or will gradually disappear.

There have been a number of patients coming to see us TCM physician for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It is not uncommon, although not many people suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Sleep apnea is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a disorder characterized by repetitive collapse of the airway, resulting in low oxygen levels and an elevated blood pressure. Sometimes a patient may experience stoppage in breathing for 10 seconds or longer.  A patients with severe OSA, may stop breathing many times a night. They may experience having to gasp for air during sleep. They may complain of tiredness, poor concentration, daytime sleepiness, poor memory, irritability and frequent urination etc.

Many of these patients may have to wear a nasal mask with a CPAP machine throughout the night to sleep. CPAP is a machine which has a function of giving a continuous positive airway pressure, thus preventing collapse of the airway.  CPAP is an effective treatment for OSA, however, compliance is an issue.

TCM views Sleep Apnea as deficiency in the lung. From our clinical observation, many of these patients also have gastric problem, stomach bloating, flatulence, frequent constipation or soft stool. Usually, they are a bit obese.
We know that breathing is the function of lung and nose. Therefore TCM treat such patients by strengthening the function of their lung. We would suggest at least one course (10 sessions) of acupuncture together with oral herbal medicine. We would also advise them to stop smoking and drinking of alcohol besides eating healthily. Surprisingly, after one to 3 months (depends on severity), these patients told us that when they jog, they realized that they did not pant so much and they could sleep better and breathe better at night and less dependent on CPAP machine.  Slowly the occurrence of the sleep apnea was lessened or disappeared. They also felt that their breathing is better and have less phlegm less bloating. Bowel movement was better too.
One of the patient told us that he had to travel overseas for work and he had to bring along his CPAP machine which he found it troublesome. Whenever he jogged he felt that he was panting a lot and his breathing was not smooth.
One of our patients told us when her son was 5 years old, he had very bad asthma. Almost every two weeks he was down with asthma. She brought him to see a Western doctor. He was often given anti-biotic. He became thinner, and his appetite was very poor. He perspired a lot and easily caught a cold. Her mother-in-law was very kind and looked after him for six months. She fed him with pig kidney and pork meat (梅肉)* with brand essence of chicken every 3 days. Slowly, his health became better. He had less asthma attacks.  She continued to strengthen him by giving him nutritious food. He did not have asthma attacks after one year. From this episode, we know that strengthening a person's health is very important.
·        *  cPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
