Vertigo, Giddiness
Vertigo is very common, many people especially those in their middle-age will experience this at least once in their life time. Vertigo is usually not serious but it may drag to many days or even months. You may not be able to do everyday tasks such as cooking and household chores. Any movement and changing direction of your head may trigger spinning. Simple things like picking up things from the floor might also cause dizziness. Whenever you rise up from your bed or when you need to lie down on your bed, you will experience a spinning sensation and feel as if the ceiling or your room is turning. At the same time, you may also feel nauseous and feel like throwing out but there is nothing coming out from your throat. Some of you may find that there is an increase in number of times you urinate at night and your stool may tend to be soft and diarrhea-like. Some of you may find it difficult to keep your balance while walking. For serious cases some may experience ringing in the ears or headaches. Vertigo is unlike some dizziness that is marked by simple lightheadedness or weakness.
The cause of vertigo could be the result of tiny crystal particles in the inner ear canal. It is often associated with age. TCM attributes dizziness/vertigo to not having enough blood supplying to the brain (供血不足于脑部) and also the coldness of stomach (肠胃虚寒).
Western doctor usually prescribed anti-dizziness to patients and advise not to drive during these period. Specialists may treat them by maneuvering the position of their head to balance the crystal particles in the inner ear canal.
One male patient, age 49 came to our clinic complaining that he had vertigo/giddiness for the last 10 months. It affected his work, although he still could turn up for his work, but some days when the giddiness were bad, he had to apply for leaves. His company was not too happy about it, as 10 months were a bit too long.
He looked for western doctors and TCM physicians, none of them seemed to help him with his giddiness. It got better for a few days and came back.
When he came to our clinic, he told us that he could not lie down on the bed and requested us to do acupuncture on sitting position. Our physician did the acupuncture for him, but about 5 minutes later, his wife said he felt very giddy, we quickly took out all the needles. Then he rested for a while and felt better.
We told him that since he felt giddy, it was not advisable to continue with the acupuncture. But he requested to do another time of acupuncture on lying position. We told him to lie down slowly and get up slowly. This time he was good and did not feel giddy. We did acupuncture on his head. After the acupuncture, he said his head was more steady and he asked for medication. The following week, he came again and told us his giddiness/vertigo was much better and he did not have giddiness but had a bit of light-headedness. He wanted us to do acupuncture for him. He continued to come for about one month and said that his vertigo was about 90% better. After one and half months he has fully recovered.
His wife had an illness called 纤维肌病 where she felt very stiff on her back and her shoulder. She could not sit or stand or lying on a certain position for a long time. She must change her postures every now and them even when she slept. She had tried many physicians, and had acupuncture and massage in the past years. It was better for a few days but came back. Because of her illness, she could not work for 20 years. So she had actually given up on treatment for her illness. After seeing her husband's vertigo recovered well, she wanted to try our treatments and she hoped she could also recover from her rare illness.
