TCM Chinese Clinic Singapore Physician Treat Cure Bell's Palsy on the Face

Bell's Palsy (口眼喎斜 口眼外斜)is a type of facial paralysis that results in an inability to control the facial muscles (including the mouth and eyes) on the affected side (usually one sided). Hence, in most cases, not only the muscles on one side of the face feel weak and numb, the  mouth and eye are drooping, the control of blinking of eyelid is difficult. This condition often comes on suddenly and usually overnight, although it can also come on gradually.

They are many possible causes of facial paralysis such as stroke, head trauma, infection of the ear, head and neck tumors, however, Bell's Palsy is the most common cause of facial paralysis. Whilst symptoms are similar, Bell's Palsy is not the result of a stroke or a transient ischemic attack.  It is recommended that you visit a doctor as soon as possible to determine the underlying cause of the facial paralysis so that the appropriate treatment can be applied.

The cause of Bell's Palsy is not clear. Most cases are thought to be caused by the herpes virus, causing an infection, inflammation or damage to the facial nerve that controls the facial muscles.

TCM believes that Bell's Palsy is due to weakness and coldness that causes muscle numbness.  病因是正气不足,脉络空虚, 卫外不固, 风邪乘虚入侵脉络,使该侧气血痹阻,脉络失于濡养,导致该侧肌肉弛缓无力.  If it is not treated and left alone over a long period of time, it could cause muscle twitching and contraction. 若久不治疗, 新血不生, 血虚不能濡养筋脉肌肉, 而成抽搐,挛缩的内风之象.

This female patient came to visit Yong Kang Medical Hall one year ago. She was kind enough to give me her consent for taking her photo and uploading it to my website.  It is particularly sensitive and challenging to obtain patients' consent to take pictures of their Bell's Palsy condition as it features their face.  However, this female patient is a Christian and wants more people who suffer Bell's Palsy to know that TCM can cure such illness. She came for several acupuncture sessions and took medication.  It took about one month before she was fully recovered. We have also treated many such cases before.

Most of them were older folks while some of them are young adults, amongst them was a pretty young girl, a bride-to-be and another one was a young medical student.  Usually the younger people who suffers Bell's Palsy are very eager to have treatment as they wish to recover from it so soon as possible. One of them was a bride-to be and she wanted to appear pretty in front of her guests and friends.

Another medical student who went to Unit States to attend a presentation for his thesis.  After the presentation, two days later he realized he had Bell's Palsy.  It could be the weather was cold in US and Singapore weather was hot.  The sudden change of weather and his anxiety for the presentation could be the cause.

It is not easy to ask for Bell's Palsy pictures from patients as they are usually not willing.  I am thankful to this kind lady as she said she wants more people suffering from Bell Palsy to know that our TCM physicians can help in this illness and can get well.
