TCM Physician TCM Clinic Chinese Medicine Cure Hives (Urticaria)

TCM Physician TCM Clinic Chinese Medicine Cure Hives
Urticaria

Hives荨麻疹(medically known as urticaria)

The cause of hives is unknown and elusive. Hives are very common. Hives are red, itchy, raised areas of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes. One hallmark of hives is their tendency to change size rapidly and to move around, disappearing in one place and reappearing in other places, often in a matter of hours, usually last no longer than 24 hours. Ordinary hives flare up suddenly. Hives appear on the skin as wheals that are red, very itchy, smoothly elevated areas of skin. They appear in varying shapes and sizes, from a few millimeters to several centimeter in diameter anywhere on the body.

An outbreak that looks alarming, first thing in the morning can be completely gone by noon, only to be back in full force later in the day. Therefore, often people  have no evidence of hives to show their doctor. The diagnosis can be established based upon the description of hives symptoms. Because hives fluctuate so fast, most patients use hand phone to snap pictures to show their doctor how the outbreak looked like at its worst.

It is not uncommon that persons have eczema can also have hives. These people have sensitive nose too. Very often they wake up in the morning sneezing and have running nose.  But a few hours later, these symptoms are gone.

Hives are more common in women than in men. It is estimated that 20% of all people will develop urticaria at some point in their lives.

TCM treats hives with herbal medicine.  They diagnose it as the fluid in the lung is not properly regulated (肺的通调水道不利) and there is heat in the lung (肺有郁热).  Patients do get well after taking a few rounds of medicine. It depends on individuals, some take shorter time to cure while some take longer time to get well.

A 35 years old lady had hives for the past six months. She told us that almost everyday she had hives. In the morning, she might wake up with big patches of raised red rashes appearing on her eyes, chin, forehead, chest and thigh. She had seen GP and was prescribed antihistamine and steroid. But the rashes were still reappearing on and off. She felt very frustrated for a long time, so she started to look for alternative treatments.

After taking the medicine we prescribed for her for one month, she said her hives were much better.  The rashes were much smaller instead of big patches. We told her that hives can be cured if she continues to refrain from taking too much spicy and "heaty food", especially the toxic food such as prawn head, dried shrimps, belachan, seafood etc. This lady had very bad hives. She took two months of medicine and the hives were completely gone.

There was another lady who also have hives for the past two months. She told me that the hives came around 4 to 5 pm almost every day. When the weather turned colder at night, the hives got worse. The hives would last till the next day till 9 am to 10am, then it slowly disappeared. In her case, she consumed one week of herbal medicine and her hives never come back again.

Our TCM physicians were trained to treat hives with special methods and herbal medicine.
Many patients were happy with the results.

  1. Hi, I've been having hives for the past 3 months. I've been seeing a TCM doctor and was told that my immune system is low and my body is cold. I was recommended to avoid certain cold foods. As you share above, spicy and heaty food should be avoided. Are there different types of hives that require us to avoid different types of food? Thank you, doctor.

  2. For those people who suffer hives, it is best to avoid heaty, oily and spicy food. It is also important to avoid seafood, particularly dried small shrimps, prawn heads etc

  3. Hi, just want to check how many time of acupuncture can we do pre week for hives? Is there any way to speed up the recovery?

  4. We suggest you do acupuncture treatment once a week. If you wish, you may do twice a week.

We suggest you take Chinese herbal medicine to speed up the recovery.

  6. Hives is not flu where it can be recovered within days. It takes some time to get well. How long it takes depends on few factors, firstly is your body immunity, secondly is the duration since the occurrence of your hives and thirdly the food you eat.
