TCM ClinicTreatment for Sprain Ligament Tendon Injury

TCM Clinic TCM Physician Treatment for Sprain, Ligament, Tendon Injury due to a Fall or Sports Activities

There are many people who came to see me for sprained ankle,tennis elbow etc. For example:
1. Young people sprain their leg during soccer game;
2. Knee or ankle pain after running to catch a bus;
3. People having tennis elbow after golfing;
4. People had a fall when walking down the staircases etc.

In ancient time, for many thousands of years, Chinese “铁打 Tie Da”is very well known. Most people will come to see“Tie Da xin xie 铁打先生”when they have legs injury or when they sprain their ankle due to a fall or sport activities.

Some people would apply oilment to massage their legs when their legs were injured and swollen. It is not advisable to massage too hard as some vessels might be broken. Sometimes the injured parts may become worse and become more swollen.

When these people come, I will first check if they have bone fracture or ligament torn. Then I will ask them if they want to have acupuncture on their injured leg. If they are fearful of acupuncture, I will only give them herbal plastering and “铁打 Tie Da” medicine. I tell them the herbal plastering can be taken off after 3 hours. Normally, if they do not have bone fracture or torn ligament, it takes about three sessions (about three days) to get well. Upon examination, if I suspect that there is bone fracture, I will refer them to a hospital and advise them to have an X-ray taken. But if they have slight ligament torn (which can be cured by itself), I will tell them to bandage the injured part every day and walk less. For those who sprained their ankle or have knee pain, we do massage for them and sometimes follow with acupuncture.

For those who have a fracture and a casting has been done on them, we can give them some “铁打 Tie Da” medicine which can help the bone to heal faster and when the casting is taken off, the injured part of the limbs can be very stiff, so we can give them one or two sessions of acupuncture and herbal plastering to help them recover faster.

TCM Physician Explains HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK

According to research carried out by a researcher, when an acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin, it stimulates a sensory nerve which triggers electrical impulses to a spinal cord nerve. That nerve then sends signals to three places:

1. To the Pituitary Gland

2. To the Midbrain

3. To the Nerve Cells

The pituitary responds by delivering endorphins and anti-inflammatory chemicals into the bloodstream. It would travel through the bloodstream to the affected area and help relieve the swelling.

2. To the Midbrain

The midbrain responds by discharging neurotransmitters which block the body’s pain pathways, easing the discomfort.

3. To the Nerve Cells

The nerve cells respond by releasing endorphins which are neurochemicals that naturally mute pain in the body, again easing the discomfort.
