A Woman with Rheumatoid Arthritis
On August 2011, a woman, age 56, with Rheumatoid Arthritis, came to see me. She had a very stiff neck, could not turn her head to both sides. She fingers were very stiff too, especially in the morning. Her toes are also very stiff but not as bad as the fingers. She had no hypertension and diabetes, but she suffers from rheumatoid arthritis for 3 years. I told her that this is an auto-immune disease. She had a few sessions of acupuncture and feels much better now.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-term disease that leads to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues. It is an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease is a disease which a person's own immune system attacks his own healthy cells or tissue.
RA usually affects joints on both sides of the body symmetrically. Wrists, fingers, knees, feet, and ankles are the most commonly affected.
The disease often begins slowly, usually with only minor joint pain, stiffness, and fatigue. If a person suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, if it is not treated, the joints can eventually be deformed.
