I have a Doctorate degree in TCM medicine. In Singapore however, TCM physicians do not refer to ourselves as specialists or dermatologists.
I conducted research in skin diseases while I was doing my master and doctorate degree in the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. As part our my training, I performed experimental research on rabbits in the university lab. After I started my TCM clinic in Telok Blangah, I focused my practice in eczema, psoriasis, hives, shingles, acne, pimples, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis and hair loss. I am glad to say that there were complete recovery in 96% of the cases. I have 20 years of clinical experience in skin diseases.
In our clinic, we (myself, physician Wu Muzhen, physician Yan Yanhua) adopt Traditional Chinese Medicine theory to treat skin diseases. We believe in the importance of helping to improve the patients' health condition, strengthen their lung and spleen. We also focus on expelling dampness, wind and heat in the body. When their body constitution improves, their skin would also improve. However unlike western medicine approaches which treats the symptoms, treating the root cause takes time. Therefore we advise our patients to be patient and continue with our treatments. By treating the cause of the skin disease, it is possible for the skin to go back to normal condition, but it takes time for the skin to fully recover.
There are different stages of skin conditions in the case of eczema and atopic dermatitis. When patients first come to see us, most of them had eczema which were reddish accompanied by oozing, weeping and crusting. After taking our prescribed medicine and using our non-steroid herbal cream, the redness darkened. Slowly, the skin became tried and scaly, which is part of the normal process of recovery. Gradually, the skin became less dry. Given some time, normal skin will appear and they do not feel itchy anymore....meaning that their eczema has fully recovered. We
have special prescriptions and effective creams to treat different eczema
cases. Eczema have different appearance, they can be fragile, weeping,
crusting, stubborn, thicken and harden types.
During the treatment, eczema patients are required to abstain from certain food. Patients can eat anything after their recovery, just like any non-eczema patients. The mother of a 17-year-old boy came to our clinic for his eczema. They were introduced by a friend whose daughter had recovered from eczema from our clinic.
She came with her son who has eczema on his left eye. After taking our herbal medicine, his condition slowly recovered. But due to his scratching at night, his eczema comes and goes. So, the mother decided to sleep at his bedside and tied her hand with his left hand so that whenever he wanted to scratch, the mother would wake up to prevent him from scratching. But he could still scratch with his upper left arm.
However, the very devoted mother knew that that was due to his scratching and thought of a way to prevent him from scratching. So she went to buy a soft helmet from a gym and made him sleep with the helmet, very soon with our herbal medication and creams, he recovered from eczema.
This is really interesting as this story shows how great a mother is!
