Hives荨麻疹(medically known as
urticaria)
The cause of hives is
unknown and elusive. Hives are very common. Hives are red, itchy, raised areas
of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes. One hallmark of hives is their
tendency to change size rapidly and to move around, disappearing in one place
and reappearing in other places, often in a matter of hours, usually last no
longer than 24 hours. Ordinary hives flare up suddenly. Hives appear on the
skin as wheals that are red, very itchy, smoothly elevated areas of skin. They
appear in varying shapes and sizes, from a few millimeters to several
centimeter in diameter anywhere on the body.
An outbreak that looks
alarming, first thing in the morning can be completely gone by noon, only to be
back in full force later in the day. Therefore, often people have no
evidence of hives to show their doctor. The diagnosis can be established based
upon the description of hives symptoms. Because hives fluctuate so fast, most
patients use hand phone to snap pictures to show their doctor how the outbreak
looked like at its worst.
It is not uncommon that
persons have eczema can also have hives. These people have sensitive nose too.
Very often they wake up in the morning sneezing and have running nose.
But a few hours later, these symptoms are gone.
Hives are more common in
women than in men. It is estimated that 20% of all people will develop
urticaria at some point in their lives.
One of my patients (she is about 35 yrs old) had hives for 6 months. She told me that almost everyday she had hives. In the morning, she may wake up with big patches of red, swollen, itchy rashes/hives appearing on her eyes, chin, forehead, chest, thigh etc.
She felt very frustrated for a long time. She had seen GP and was prescribed antihistamine and steroid. But the rashes/hives still come and go for the last 6 months.
After taking the medicine I prescribed (for one month), she said her hives were much better. Hives were much smaller instead of big patches. I told her that hives can be cured if she continues to refrain from taking too much spicy and heaty food, especially the toxic food such as prawn head, soup that made from small dried shrimps, belachan, seafood etc.
This lady had very bad hives. There were other patients who did not have such bad hives, they only took one week of medicine and the hives were gone.
There was another patient (age 38) who also have hives for the last two months. She told me that the hives came around 4 to 5 pm almost every day. When the weather turns colder at night, the hives got worse. The hives would last till the next day till 9 am to 10am, it then slowly disappeared.
