Using TCM in conjunction with Western Treatment for Breast
Cancer
(all the Western medicine names and dates
were furnished by the patient)
A 60
year-old woman came to see me on 4th Nov 2011. She said she has breast cancer (stage 3) on
her right breast. In Oct 2011, she felt pain on her chest and went for a
check-up and discovered that she had breast tumor which measured about 6.5 cm
and it affected 3 of her lymph nodes.
Fortunately, it DID NOT spread to other part of the body (such as bone,
lung and liver). She asked for TCM
anti-cancer herbs before going for the chemo injection on Dec 2011.
As
the tumors was too big, the oncologist in SGH said that she must go for
chemotherapy before they could operate on her. So, she started chemotherapy on 1st
Dec 2011 (one injection every three week, four injection altogether). She said
she would finish her chemotherapy by Feb 2nd 2012. Her hair began to drop off one week after the
injection. She had her second injection on 12th Jan, 2012.
She
came to see me again on 18th Jan 2012 and said that the tumor became
smaller but complained that she felt very uncomfortable (她很辛苦). She felt fatigue, thirsty, had little saliva, poor
appetite, heart burn, difficulty in breathing, yellowish urine and constipation. Her shoulder, back bone and legs were week,
finger nails became grey in colour and her toes were cold. I prescribed herbal
medicine to boost her energy and alleviate the other symptoms. She said that
she could feel the tumor become smaller but the lump was still hard. So she
requested for herbal plastering to reduce the size of the lump further and to
soften it. I therefore prescribed 10 packets of herbal plaster for her to paste
on her right breast.
Subsequently,
on 7th Feb 2012, 26th Feb 2012 and 19th March 2012,
she came back to replenish the herbal medicine and plastering. Altogether she
bought 40 packets of herbal plastering and told me that they were effective and
the tumor became softer and smaller.
After
the 4th chemotherapy, she was scheduled to go for “Paclitaxel” injection
(altogether 12 injections, to be carried out every once a week) commencing on
23rd Feb 2012. However, after the 10th injection, the
doctor decided to stop as her fingers and toes were extremely numb.
She informed
me that she would be going for surgery on 04/06/2012 to remove the whole right
breast. After the surgery, she was told
that they would start her on “Trastuzumab (Herceptin)” injection on 21/06/2012.
She would have 12 injections (once every 3 weeks). Her “Trastuzumab (Herceptin)” was scheduled to
be finished by Feb 2013.
On
19th May 2012, she came again and complained her toes, sole and arms
were numb and asked for herbal medicine. She said that if she did not take
herbal medicine, she felt dizzy.
On 1st
July 2012, she came again for herbal medicine and told me that she had surgery
to remove her right breast on 4th June 2012. At the same time, she said that the doctor told
her that she had to undergo radiotherapy and was prescribed calcium tablet and Vitamin
B+ Complex.
She
came again on 24th Aug 2012 and complained that she had abdominal
pain and yellow discharge and I prescribed some herbal medicine for her. She said the doctor told her that she was not
suitable to take “Tamaxifen” and instead prescribed “Letrozole” (Femara) for
her and she had to take for 5 years. She said that the side effects of
“Letrozole” were hot flushes, tiredness, lack of energy, osteoporosis and hair
thinning etc.
On
20th Nov 2015, she came again for herbal medicine. She informed me
that on top of “Letrozole (Femara®)”, she was precirbed “Alendronate (Fosamax®)
and Levothyroxine (Euthyrox®).
Her
cancer has gone into remission and she is well except that she still complains
of numbness and her hair is still very thin. Till today 29th June
2017 (after 5½ years), she still come to see me for up-keep and maintenance.
She
told me she felt much better after taking TCM medicine. There were also many other women who came to see me on breast cancer, some of them have survived over 10 years or more.
The above case shows that herbal medicine can be used in combination with chemo & surgery to more effectively treat cancer. Herbal medicine generally alleviate the side-effects of chemo & western medicine and boost the patients’ immunity and energy level.
